Whenever I hear music from my young adulthood - grunge - it sometimes feels like a dream. Isn’t it hard to believe that was 30 years ago? When I hear a song, it brings me right back to that place. A friend on the island where I live, Steve Hall, has create an extraordinary one man cover of Temple of the Dog’s “Hunger Strike”. It is a breathtaking version of an incredible song.
Listening to this takes me to a related memory from those days long ago. I remember sitting at my desk in the office under the staircase at the old Starbucks Roasting Plant on December 12, 1992. The company was still pretty small (it had just gone public earlier in the year), and I was a new marketing assistant and fielded all of the calls for our team. It was late morning, and on the phone was Howard Schultz. He called with a detailed and imminent need. MTV was secretly filming their "Live and Loud" New Year’s Eve show at Pier 48 the next day, and they wanted Starbucks to cater the event. Howard wanted us to make it happen. Needless to say, we made it happen.
I will always remember jamming to get things set up, and being at the rehearsal and show. Flea and Anthony from RHCP were the hosts and hung around talking with us. The Breeders kicked things off, then Cyprus Hill (with a few Pearl Jam members – Pearl Jam was scheduled to be the co-headliner but Eddie got sick and they couldn’t perform), and Nirvana. This is the night when they filmed the famous "Live and Loud" show. The show was written up in my hometown paper, The Kitsap Sun (it was called the Bremerton Sun back then). https://products.kitsapsun.com/.../288505_a_look_behind...
I’d forgotten the details of those incredible few days. What a fun thing to remember. Now I need to go watch the movie Singles again!
We lived in a pretty extraordinary time and place to be young, didn’t we?

Just listened to the cover and that IS awesome!
Thanks for bringing be back to the second facility we were in after moving from the original roasting plant on the East side of Airport Way. Those were the days when we could fit almost everyone in the company in the common space for Open Forums. O yes, and then there was the constant need for us to be adaptable to take advantage of opportunities to put our coffee front and center!! We were a nimble bunch of partners back then!!
How did I never hear that story before? Too cool!
Oh my gosh, Allyson... you brought back so many memories of that time. We did live in an extraordinary time. I am with you - those sounds send me racing back to that time. Thanks for sharing!
